Protect Your Privacy - Fake IDs for the Net
Posted on January 27th, 2008 in Faking on the Net
Here are some fun facts about you:I am pretty sure that you are from the United States. The last page you visited is at HERE, and your internet gateway (the computer that connects you to the internet) is 38.103.63.59 on .
Probably the most important piece of information, though, is your IP- which happens to be 38.103.63.59.
That’s pretty much the basic stuff. Depending on your security settings, it is possible to obtain much more information, but it begins to cross the line as being intrusive, so I am not going to get into that here.
Now, what can you do to protect yourself?
The idea of websites collecting visitor data may be frightening to some, but convenient to others. While there are a number of people who can and will use your information with malicious intent, the vast majority of sites use this information for statistical purposes; to study their user demographic. The result is a somewhat more personalized “experience.” Ads suddenly begin to display items similar to things you have bought online. Websites load more smoothly, fit the screen more attractively and international sites are presented to you in your native tongue.
Is there a “caller-ID block” for the internet?
Yes and no. Due to the nature of the internet, there will always be certain information that needs to pass back and forth between client and server. There are some things, however, that you can do to control this information somewhat. The use of anonymous proxies have become more popular, and are no longer just for the more experienced users.
What’s an anonymous proxy?(short answer)
It is basically just another computer on the internet that you can place in between yourself and the site you wish to visit:
Me————->[PROXY]————->website
You do this already with your ISP, but the difference with an anonymous proxy is that while your info is passed along to the proxy, the proxy passes its own info along to the website you wish to visit. Essentially, if you are in the US and your proxy server is in Germany, then the info passed to the webserver will make it look like you are coming from Germany.
I have no idea what the hell you just said.
Think of a friend who lives a good distance from you. If you were to call them from home, it would be a long distance call (assuming you don’t have a nationwide service). Think of another friend that lives in between you and the first friend, and if they were to call you or the first friend, then it would be a local call for them.
Me<--------------------[Friend 2]------------------>Friend 1
Using an anonymous proxy would be like Friend 2 placing a 3-way call to you and Friend 1, then putting the phone down and letting you talk.
How do I get one of these anonymous proxies?
You can find them by searching on Google, you can use a free service like Megaproxy or you can install software like Anonymizer. You will notice that there are some that are free, and some you have to pay for. Anyone leery of online spies can feel safe and secure using this vigorous tool - Anonymizer Anonymous Surfing.
A note about free anonymous proxies:
Remember, you get what you pay for. While it may not be too difficult to find a free anonymous proxy out there, it is difficult to find a free RELIABLE proxy server. Here are some downsides to using free services:
-They are unreliable. A server may be up one day and down the next.-They are slow. Many out there are nothing more than glorified PCs with “consumer” level network connections. Surfing from these proxies will be like using dialup.
-You will soon learn that many popular sites, such as Google, block the IPs of known anonymous proxies to protect themselves from potential abuse. Yep, some out there ruined it for the rest of us.
-Because of this, you will need to keep going through different proxies until you find one that has not been blacklisted. This means, manually changing your internet settings every time you want to do this. Protect your identity & surf anonymously. Get your FREE Anonymous Surfing Trial here now!
